calm, Communicative, and Flexible™: A behavior and social-emotional health program

Behavior and social-emotional health program

*Now in Northern Virginia and Bethesda*
  • Does your child struggle with behaviors like rigidity, aggression, tantrums, or impulsivity?
  • Do they have difficulty attending or listening at home and school?
  • Are they constantly on the move?
  • Are they having difficulty maintaining peer relationships?

A child’s ability to stay calm, communicate, and adapt their behavior are each essential components of their social-emotional development.  When a child has mastered them they are more likely to experience success in school, at home, and with peers.  However, when these abilities are not fully developed, children experience heightened emotional states and exhibit challenging behaviors.  Unfortunately, traditional behavioral programs, like ABA and CBT, mainly focus on treating the symptoms, i.e. the behaviors themselves.  The causes of these behaviors go unaddressed allowing for new challenges to emerge stemming from the same source. However, by working on the core challenges leading to the behaviors, you can improve your child’s behavior and social-emotional health at the same time.

For Example,

when you ignore a behavior like a tantrum, you may see a decrease in the behavior itself, but you are also ignoring the child’s expression and their emotional needs.  Instead of trying to shut down a child’s behavior and their emotional expression, we encourage emotional expression while discouraging the behavior by treating it’s causes.  Asking yourself “Why” a child is exhibiting these behaviors is the first step in treating the cause(s).  Our aim is to decrease the behavior and increase constructive emotional expression while supporting the child and helping them co- regulate (Read this article about why co-regulation is necessary).
